Flames Maintain Fourth-Place Standing at Rod Myers Invite
Positioning for five of the 11 teams in the Rod Myers Invitational field remained unchanged on Sunday, including the Liberty Flames who concluded their fall schedule with a fourth-place showing at the Duke-hosted event.
Only two teams were able to post scores in red figures during the final round, including the host Blue Devils. Duke carded a one-under par 287 and made the most significant jump up the leaderboard to finish its event in third place with an overall one-over par 865 (297-281-287).
Northwestern used its sizeable 36-hole lead to withstand a final round charge from Baylor to claim the team title. The Wildcats, who led by 12 strokes coming into the day, won by a three-stroke margin with a 10-under par 854 (283-280-291).
Baylor had the best final round on the Duke University Golf Course (par 72, 7,154 yards) and finished in second place with a seven-under par 857 (294-281-282).
Liberty claimed fourth place with a five-over par 869 (294-282-293), finishing one stroke ahead of North Carolina. The Tar Heels had the highest closing round of the top five teams in the field and slipped to fifth place with a six-over par 870 (285-290-295).
A pair of Northwestern golfers shared individual medalist honors. Matt Fitzpatrick (67-68-72) was the overnight leader before fellow teammate Jack Perry (71-66-70) closed with a two-under par 70 to tie Fitzpatrick's winning nine-under par 207 score.
Chase Marinell was Liberty's top finisher, posting his third top 10 finish of the fall season. The senior, who finished sixth overall with a four-under par 212 (71-68-73), made the turn on Sunday at three-over par, but was able to trim two strokes off his final score thanks to a pair of birdies during his closing nine holes of play.
Ian McConnell had his first regular season top 20 finish since finishing tied for 16th at last year's Rod Myers Invitational. The senior posted a one-over par 217 (74-69-74), bookending two-over par 74 scores with his third sub-70 round of the fall to finish tied for 11th place.
Niklas Lindstrom had the best closing round for the Flames, posting an even par 72 to finish the event tied for 22nd place with a four-over par 220 (72-76-72). The senior overcame a double bogey on the par-5 No. 11 hole with four birdies during his final 10 holes of play.
Fenasse closed the event with a two-over par 74 and finished the event overall with a seven-over par 223 (77-72-74).
Hocker had his second-best round of the Flames' fall finale event on Sunday, helping him post an overall score of 13-over par 229 (79-73-77).
Jacob Mast competed in the event as an individual and finished tied for 57th place with a 15-over par 231 (79-74-78).
The Flames will have the next two-plus months to prepare for their next event when Liberty returns to the Sea Best Invitational on Feb 3-4, 2014. The two-day, 54-hole event will be contested on the famed Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Liberty competed in the Jacksonville hosted event from 2010 to 2012, spotlighted by a second-place finish in 2012.
