High Point Posts 3-0 Sweep of Lady Flames

Junior Gabrielle Shipe collected a team-high 11 digs on Saturday at High Point.

High Point used an efficient offense, recording a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-21) sweep of the visiting Liberty Lady Flames, Saturday at the Millis Center.

With the win, the Panthers improve to 9-11 on the season, including 3-2 in Big South play. The Lady Flames are now 3-15, 2-3 in conference competition, after a 1-1 showing on the weekend.

High Point held a .315-.175 advantage in hitting percentage for the match, and the hosts led in digs, 53-45. Liberty won the blocking battle, 8-4.

Senior Lillie Happel recorded a double-double for the second match in a row, posting 10 kills, 10 digs and a team-high four blocks. Freshman Nzea McQuitery totaled eight kills and three blocks, while senior Jade Craycraft led Liberty with 27 assists. Junior Gabrielle Shipe collected 11 digs, while sophomore Allie Reynolds notched 10 digs.

High Point junior Kristin Heldt scored a match-high 15 kills, in addition to 10 digs. Junior Katie Vincent added 11 kills, while senior Maddie Simpson recorded a match-high 40 assists. Sophomore Annemarie Chin had match highs with 16 digs and three aces.

During set one, McQuitery put Liberty into the lead, 14-13, with a kill. High Point then staged a 4-0 rally, getting two kills from Heldt. Craycraft answered with a kill and an ace, trimming the Liberty deficit to 17-16. From that point on, High Point outscored the Lady Flames, 8-1, to earn the set win, 25-17.

High Point outhit Liberty, .290-.097, in the opening set, although the Lady Flames posted 3.5 team blocks. Vincent and Heldt both scored five kills for the Panthers.

The second set remained tightly contested throughout. Liberty held a 14-11 edge after a Craycraft kill. High Point then went on an 8-3 run, surging ahead, 19-17, as Heldt sent down five kills during the surge. Happel then scored a kill, sparking a 3-0 run which gave Liberty a 20-19 lead. High Point then scored four unanswered points. With Liberty trailing, 24-21, Happel connected for consecutive kills, but Simpson tallied a kill to give High Point set two, 25-23.

The hosts hit .256 during set two, compared to .217 for the Lady Flames. Happel recorded seven kills for the Lady Flames, while High Point's Davis and Heldt had six kills apiece.

High Point built a 21-14 advantage during the final set, before the Lady Flames began to come back. Consecutive kills by Monica Johnson made it 21-17, and Liberty cut the deficit to four again, 22-18 and 23-19, on kills from Caroline Douglas. Vincent recorded a kill, giving High Point match point at 24-19. McQuitery and Happel then recorded kills, before Savannah Angel's kill ended set three, 25-21, in High Point's favor.

The Panthers connected at a .405 pace in the third set, while Liberty hit .189. Angel posted six kills on as many swings, while McQuitery responded with five kills for the Lady Flames.

The Lady Flames return home, where they will host a pair of Big South matches at the Vines Center next weekend. Liberty meets Charleston Southern on Friday at 7 p.m., before taking on Coastal Carolina at noon on Saturday, in a rematch of the 2012 Big South Volleyball Championship final match.
