2013 UVa Fall Classic Draws

After a three week layoff, the Liberty men's tennis team returns to action this weekend at the UVa Fall Classic in Charlottesville, Va. The tournament opens tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. and will run through Sunday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center.

The Flames will be making their third consecutive appearance in the tournament. Last year, Shea Thomas posted a perfect weekend, capturing a singles title in the Gold Bracket and a doubles crown in with teammate Egon Samaai in the Black Bracket.

The tournament features seven singles flights and seven doubles flights. Liberty is one of 21 schools to have players competing at this year's tournament. Binghamton, Bucknell, College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, Cornell, East Tennessee State, George Mason, George Washington, James Madison, Longwood, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Princeton, Radford, VCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and William & Mary will also send competitors to the event.

The Flames have a tough doubles slate, facing three seeded doubles tandems. Thomas and Jorge Azuero square off against No. 2 seed Diego Nunez and Sebastian Yllera of ETSU. Liberty's Spanish duo of Guillem Secanell and Sergio Mourelo challenge the top-seeded pair of Josh Record and Stephen Hardy from College of Charleston. Alejandro Llamas and Stan Vaughan are the Flames' third tandem to face a seeded opponent, matching up with No. 2 seed Nika Dolidize and Rami Labna of Penn State.

A trio of Flames begin singles play during the first wave of matches, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Segur is pitted against Wake Forest's Max Kan and Llamas challenges Bharani Sankar of Longwood. Samaai is one of two Liberty competitors ranked in the tournament, holding the fourth seed in the Black Bracket. The freshman plays Binghamton's Rueben Haggai.

At noon, Mourelo goes up against Tanner Baine of George Mason and Azuero takes on Rafael Ribas of Virginia Tech. Vaughan begins shortly after Mourelo and Azuero, facing second-seeded JC Aragone of Virginia at 12:15 p.m.

Thomas, seeded fourth in the Blue Bracket, plays Alex Sydney of Cornell at 2 p.m. Secanell wraps up singles play for Liberty, challenging the third seed from the Gold Bracket, Dan Davies of Princeton, at 3:30 p.m.
