Brittany Yang grabbed the spotlight for the Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad this weekend at the Hokie Fall Invite, posting a perfect 4-0 singles record en route to the Flight C title. Overall, Liberty notched 16 singles victories and seven doubles wins over the course of the three-day tournament at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

"We won a lot this weekend but what's really more important than that is the quality of the matches we played," commented Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "We're looking to build our program from the fall to the spring and this is the type of tournament that really helps us elevate our game, because every time we step on the court we are playing a quality competitor."

In singles play, Yang opened the tournament with a straight-set win against Pittsburgh's Jocelyn Lu, 6-3, 6-1. The sophomore continued her strong play with two more straight-set wins versus ACC opponents, Lauran Ramthun of Virginia Tech, 6-3, 6-1, and Molly Wickman of Pittsburgh, 6-2, 6-2. In the title match, Yang jumped out to a one set lead against James Madison's Cara Wirth. After Wirth won set two, Yang completed the win with a convincing 6-1 victory in the third set to claim the crown.

Lady Flames Belen Rivera, Maria Khval and Valerie Thong each won their first round matches, with Khval also collecting a victory in the quarterfinals versus Alex Huie of James Madison.

Liberty's Mariely Hassey improved to 6-1 in singles tilts this fall, posting a 3-1 mark during the weekend. After dropping her first match, the freshman rallied to win three consecutive contests and collected the consolation title in the Flight B bracket.

Also collecting singles wins during the tournament for Liberty was Cameron Richard, Lauren Mabe and Annisha Domenech.

Khval and Rivera paced the Lady Flames in doubles action, finishing the tournament with a 3-1 record in the Flight A draw. The Liberty duo opened play by downing James Madison's Sarah Kahn and Rachel Nelson, 8-5, before ousting Virginia Tech's top doubles tandem of Raluca Mita and Carol Kahoun, 8-7 (8), in a thrilling contest. After falling in the semifinals, Khval and Rivera rebounded in their consolation match, defeating Huie and Taylor Pinchoff of James Madison, 8-6.

In the Flight B doubles bracket, Rebekah Jenkins and Richard collected a pair of victories, while Yang and Hassey picked up a win in Flight A action.

Liberty continues fall play with a trip to Charlottesville, Va. and the ITA Atlantic Regional. The three-day tournament will take place from Oct. 18-Oct. 20.
