The Liberty women's soccer team returned to the win column, Wednesday afternoon, opening Big South play at Osborne Stadium with a 1-0 victory over Charleston Southern.

Brittany Aanderud posted the lone goal for Liberty late in the first half, courtesy of a Casey Norris assist.

The Lady Flames move to 6-3 (1-0 Big South) on the season, marking the third straight year Liberty has opened conference action with a victory. Charleston Southern falls to 3-5-1 (0-1 Big South) in 2013.

Goalkeeper Holly Van Noord finished the contest with four saves en route to her sixth shutout of the season. Dana McLaughlin played the full contest in between the posts for Charleston Southern, picking up six saves.

Liberty controlled possession for the majority of the opening period, outshooting the Buccaneers, 17-3. The Lady Flames took five shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, with McLaughlin collecting four saves off attempts by Aanderud and Jaime Bouffard.

After a barrage of shots, Liberty managed to ignite the scoreboard in the 43rd minute. From just past midfield, Norris sent a through ball up to Aanderud. The sophomore then blasted a shot from 25 yards out into the middle of the net. Aanderud's second marker on the season gave the Lady Flames a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

In the second period, Liberty continued to target the net, putting up 12 shots compared to the Buccaneers' four. Aanderud and Dawn Elmers each contributed a shot on goal for Liberty, resulting in two more saves for McLaughlin.

Charleston Southern's best look at a goal occurred just before the 84th minute. A trio of Buccaneers broke away from the Liberty defense, leaving only Van Noord standing between them and the equalizing goal. Leading scorer Toni Lashley fired a shot at the Lady Flames' net, but Van Noord dove on the ball to collect her fourth and final save of the contest, setting up the 1-0 final.

Liberty outshot the Buccaneers in the contest, 29-7, marking the most shots taken by the Lady Flames, this season. Head coach Jessica Hain's squad also held a 5-0 advantage over Charleston Southern in corner kicks.
