Liberty Men's XC Climbs to No. 8 in Region
Thanks to an impressive victory at Saturday's VMI Invitational, the Liberty men's cross country team climbed to No. 8 in the Southeast Region, as announced today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Eastern Kentucky remains atop the regional rankings, followed by defending Southeast Region champion Virginia and N.C. State. After finishing second to Liberty at VMI, High Point falls to No. 10 this week.
Liberty, which was ranked No. 10 a week ago, took home the VMI Invitational team championship with a score of 19 points, putting the Flames 32 markers ahead of High Point. The Flames' Caleb Edmonds, Ngetich Kipchirchir, Josh MacDonald and Jeremie Bourget swept the top four places in the individual standings, in that order. Meanwhile, Sam Hibbs finished ninth and Zach Barker was 11th to punctuate Liberty's first invitational title of the 2013 season.
The Liberty men's and women's squads will be back in action Saturday morning, when they travel to Earlysville, Va., for the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational. The Flames' second of three meets at Panorama Farms this season will commence at 10 a.m. with the men's 8K. The women's 5K will follow at 10:30.
Panorama Farms will also play host to the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships on Nov. 15. As a result, many of the top teams in the region will preview the course on Saturday. Nine of the top 14 men's squads in this week's regional rankings are entered, headlined by regional No. 1 Eastern Kentucky, No. 2 Virginia, No. 4 North Carolina and No. 6 Duke.
