Marshall Edges Liberty with Golden Goal
Seeking its third six-game win streak in program history, Sunday, the Liberty women's soccer team hosted Marshall. Unfortunately for the Lady Flames, the Thundering Herd forced overtime, setting up a golden goal by Kristine Culicerto to earn the 1-0 victory.
With the defeat, Liberty falls to 5-2 on the season, snapping the Lady Flames five-game win streak. Liberty's pair of 2013 losses have each occurred due to a golden goal after regulation. Marshall improves to 4-2-1 on the year and now leads the all-time series, 2-0-1.
Marshall proved to be the aggressor in the opening period, posting six shots compared to three for Liberty. In the 12th minute, Myka DeMarco fired a shot at the Liberty goal that was corralled by goalkeeper Holly Van Noord. Just over a minute later, the Lady Flames returned the favor with an attempt from Jaime Bouffard. However, goalkeeper Lizzie Kish was there to make the grab.
Liberty took two more shots in the period, while the defense blocked a trio of attempts from The Herd, leading to a scoreless first half.
In the second period, both goalkeepers put on a defensive clinic. Van Noord made a total of five saves in the stanza, while Kish collected four.
During the 49th minute, Van Noord made a diving save off a Kelly Culicerto shot, deflecting the ball to the left of the goal.
Liberty's best look at goal came in the 70th minute. After Julia Delgatti fired a shot upon the Marshall net, Kish bobbled the ball, forcing a scramble between the netminder and Bouffard. Kish was eventually able to secure the ball, keeping the game scoreless.
Later in the 80th minute, Aanderud booted the ball from the right side just outside the 18-yard box. Once again, Kish corralled the attempt to prevent Liberty from gaining the advantage.
Rebekah Page took the final shot for the Lady Flames in regulation. The midfielder headed an attempt toward the Marshall net. Kish picked up her fifth save of the game on the play, which ultimately led to the Lady Flames' second overtime game of the year.
In the 99th minute, midfielder Jenna Dubs took a free kick from the right side, lobbing the ball to the far post for Kristine Culicerto, who headed it in for the golden goal.
Marshall outshot Liberty, 16-12, in the contest and held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks. Van Noord finished the contest with six saves, while Kish collected five in the shutout.
Liberty returns to action on Friday, heading back to North Carolina to take on Elon. The Lady Flames look to break up the stalemate in the all-time series, as they take on the former Big South and current Southern Conference member. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
