Two Liberty University students scored big Thursday night at the New Balance Hot Shot Series competition in connection with the Big South Conference tournament. The students traveled to Rock Hill, S. C., and Winthrop University, site of Big South semifinals.

During halftime of the first game, the male competition was held. Tyler McClure, a sophomore from Stuarts Draft, Va., racked up 30 points during the 45-second competition, which earned him first place and a prize package which included a trip for two to Orlando.

Kristin Collins, a sophomore from Lynchburg, totaled 22 points during halftime of the second semifinal game and the female competition. Her score placed her in second place.

The New Balance Hot Shot Series began on each league campus in early February. Liberty's event enlisted a record 54 men and 16 women. The top three first-round scorers moved on to the campus finals during halftime of the Lady Flames' February 17 game against Coastal Carolina. Each Big South campus winner is invited to participate in the championship round each year.

Tyler McClure's winnings included an expense-paid trip to Orlando, Fla., for two people including transportation on Amtrak and lodging. The trip package includes a gift card which can be used for any of the local theme parks. Kristin Collins' second-place prize package included a wide variety of items from Big South sponsors including Amtrak and Mondo. All of the winners from each campus will receive new shoes from the title sponsor -- New Balance.
