For the 10th time in the last 11 years, Liberty opened up its home football schedule with a victory, defeating future Big South foe Monmouth, 45-15, in front of 18,467 fans.

A strong defensive effort by the Flames limited the Hawks to 280 yards (101 coming during the fourth quarter) and resulted in three turnovers.

Each of the three Monmouth giveaways were interceptions and all three resulted in Liberty touchdowns, including a Kevin Fogg 29-yard interception return for a score. The other two resulted in scoring drives by the Flames, helping Liberty post its second-highest point total in 13 games under head coach Turner Gill.

Offensively, Liberty missed posting 400 total offensive yards by one yard (399). Quarterback Josh Woodrum found wide receiver Darrin Peterson open for two touchdown passes, including an 85-yard strike late in the second quarter. Peterson posted his second-straight 100-yard receiving game, finishing the night with three receptions for 124 total receiving yards.
