UNCW Fall Invitational Draws

The Liberty Flames men's tennis squad opens its fall tournament slate this weekend with a trip to the UNCW Fall Invitational in Wilmington, N.C. The tournament begins today and runs through Sunday afternoon and will be held at the Althea Gibson Tennis Center.

Joining the Flames will be six other squads, host UNCW, East Carolina, North Carolina Central, VCU,  Chattanooga and New Mexico. VCU (No. 30), UNCW (No. 43) and New Mexico (No. 72) all finished ranked in the top 75 in the country following the conclusion of the 2013 spring season.

Despite the loss of Siim Tuus, Liberty's all-time leader in singles wins, to graduation, the Flames return a core group of players this season. Headlining the group of returnees is senior Shea Thomas. Thomas had a breakout junior season, shattering the program's single-season singles victories record with 27 and tying the program mark for doubles wins in a year with 23. Also returning are juniors Jorge Azuero and Dillon Segur. Azuero posted 14 wins in both singles and doubles competition during the spring campaign. Sophomore Egon Samaai and senior Stan Vaughan round out the Flames' returning starters from a year ago.

Liberty has four doubles teams and 10 singles entrants in the tournament. The Flames' doubles tandems of Thomas/Samaai, Azuero/Segur, Sergio Mourelo/Josiah Boda, and Vaughan/Alejandro Llamas each begin play at 9:30 a.m. this morning.

In singles action, Mourelo (No. 1 seed) and Azuero (No. 4 seed) are both ranked in their respective flights. Mourelo, Guillem Secanell, Carson Greve and Vaughan begin play at 10:45 a.m. in the C Flight. Also starting at 10:45 a.m. will be Azuero and Segur in Flight B.

At 12:15 p.m., Thomas and Samaai begin singles play in the A Flight, while Boda and Llamas start in Flight D.
