Liberty University hosted its sixth annual Chancellor's Kickoff, Friday evening, inside Williams Stadium, one of the first official events on Liberty Mountain for the 2013-14 academic year.

Liberty's Class of 2017 has spent most of the last two days moving into their dorms and adjusting to campus life. Gates opened at Williams Stadium at 5 p.m. and the largest freshman class in school history with more than 4,000 students was served dinner and had a chance to watch one of the final football workouts for Liberty's 2013 August training camp.

Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr., officially welcomed Liberty's newest freshman class, treating them to dinner on the grounds at the stadium. During the annual kickoff event, Chancellor Falwell welcomed the fresh faces to Liberty's campus and talked with them about how important athletics is to the overall collegiate experience.

The remainder of the evening was filled with exciting activities and fun-filled competitions before Liberty's football team took the field for a two-plus hour practice. The event's schedule was geared toward instructing the freshmen on the Flames Football game day traditions.

Toward the end of the event, which included segments featuring Liberty's cheerleaders and the Spirit of the Mountain marching band, head football coach Turner Gill addressed the crowd.

The second-year head coach thanked the freshmen for attending and told them how important it was to support their fellow students by attending each home game. Following Gill's address, Alan York, the evening's emcee and the radio "Voice of the Flames," introduced the freshman football players to their fellow student body members.

The Liberty Flames Sports Network was on site throughout the evening and provided a video recap of today's event, including an interview with Chancellor Falwell and Director of Athletics Jeff Barber, who both talked about Liberty's newest freshman class.

The football program will hold its final full workout of preseason training camp on Saturday evening as part of Flames Football Fan Fest. Gates at the stadium will open at 6 p.m., with a full scrimmage slated to start at 7 p.m. Following the scrimmage, Liberty's players and coaches will be available for a meet-and-greet session in the Williams Stadium Concourse. The event is free of charge and open to the public.
