Throughout Liberty's preseason training camp, LibertyFlames.com will preview each position on the Flames' team, providing insight into the development of each group's players leading up to the Flames' season opener against Kent State on Aug. 29.

Today, we continue our position-by-position preview by looking at the Flames' cornerbacks position, including insight from recruiting coordinator/cornerbacks coach Marshall Roberts and seniors Walt Aikens and Kevin Fogg.

Cornerbacks

Along with the offensive line, Liberty's cornerbacks got an offseason boost from the NCAA when a medical hardship waiver was approved for Kevin Fogg to give him an additional year of eligibility.

Fogg, a consensus first-team All-America return specialist in 2011, was positioned to have another standout year during his senior campaign in 2012.

Through four games, Fogg has already returned a punt for a touchdown and was one of Liberty's defensive leaders with 18 tackles (13 solo, five assisted), 2.0 tackles for a loss, two pass breakups, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.

However, the senior suffered a non-contact injury during a light Sunday afternoon workout leading up to the Flames' Big South opener against Gardner-Webb, which sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Thankfully, Kenny Scott, Fogg's backup heading into the season, seized the extra playing time and finished the year fifth on the roster with 48 tackles (37 solo, 11 assisted), to go along with five pass breakups and 4.0 tackles for a loss.

Finishing just ahead of Scott on Liberty's defensive statistics sheet was Walt Aikens, his counterpart for the remainder of the season on the opposite side of the field.

Aikens returns to start at boundary cornerback, while Fogg will start at field cornerback, followed directly behind by Scott to give Liberty a potent three-man cornerback combination.

Aikens had his best year as a Flame since transferring from Illinois two years ago. He finished the 2012 season fourth on the team with 51 tackles (39 solo, 12 assisted), six pass breakups, an interception and three forced fumbles.

Behind Aikens will be Sorie Bayoh, a redshirt senior, who played in eight games and started once in place of Aikens. He finished his junior season with 13 tackles (10 solo, three assisted), an interception and a pass breakup.
