2013 Training Camp Position Preview: QB
Throughout Liberty's preseason training camp, LibertyFlames.com will preview each position on the Flames' team, providing insight into the development of each group's players leading up to the Flames' season opener against Kent State on Aug. 29.
Today, we continue our position-by-position preview by looking at the Flames' quarterback position, including insight from quarterbacks coach Joe Dailey, redshirt sophomore Josh Woodrum and redshirt freshman Javan Shashaty.
Neither Brian Hudson nor Josh Woodrum set themselves apart from each other during training camp last August, leaving head coach Turner Gill to use the Flames' season opener against Wake Forest as a potential proving ground.
Hudson's better play against the ACC foe pushed Gill to give him the nod as Liberty's signal caller. However, Hudson suffered an injury during Liberty's home opener against No. 24 Norfolk State, positioning Woodrum back on top of the depth chart.
Woodrum took advantage of his first collegiate start, throwing for 322 yards (34-of-44) and two touchdowns at No. 14/12 Montana. The redshirt freshman's stellar play at one of the most intense FCS environments in the country set the stage for a remarkable rookie season for the Roanoke, Va., native.
Woodrum started the final nine games of the year, finishing the season with 1,966 passing yards (183-of-267) with 11 touchdowns. He set a program freshman year record with 1,963 total offensive yards and his passing yards ranked second in program history among rookies.
Woodrum's stellar freshman campaign garnered regional and national attention. He was voted the 2013 Big South and VaSID Offensive Rookie of the Year and finished No. 13 in the final voting for the Jerry Rice Award (given annually to the top FCS freshman in the country).
Woodrum enters this year's training campaign in a completely different situation, one that securely has him positioned as Liberty's starting quarterback and the most experienced signal caller on Liberty's 2013 roster.
With a standout freshman season under his belt, Woodrum is poised to chase some of the most hallowed quarterbacking records in program history, including Robby Justino's career passing mark. The 2013 Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame inductee was Liberty's last quarterback to start all four years of his playing career and finished his days in a Liberty uniform with a program-best 9,548 passing yards.
Only time will tell where Woodrum's career numbers will rank in Liberty annals, but a solid sophomore season could help him toward setting new program standards.
