Garrett Young ripped three doubles in Liberty's 8-2 win Tuesday.

Liberty's Garrett Young went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBI to pace the Flames past VCU, 8-2, Tuesday afternoon at the Diamond.

With the victory in its first midweek contest of the season, Liberty moves to 7-3. VCU falls to 4-4. The win was head coach Matt Royer's club's sixth-straight victory.

The visiting Flames jumped out on top with a run to open the contest. With one out, the VCU left fielder dropped a fly ball to left by Phil John (Sr., RF, Linwood, N.J.) for a two-base error. Liberty promptly took advantage of the miscue as Young (Jr., CF, Fountain Valley, Calif.) lined his first double of the afternoon into the right-center field gap to score John and give Liberty a 1-0 advantage.

VCU knotted the game in the home half of the second inning at 1-1. Third baseman Chris Jackson hit his first home run of the season over the left-field fence leading off the frame for VCU's first run of the contest.

Liberty quickly regained the lead in the top half of the third. John walked to open the frame and stole second. Young doubled once again, this time, down the left field line, past the bag at third to plate John. After the Flames' center fielder moved to third on a wild pitch, Young came home to make it, 3-1 Liberty, on a RBI ground ball to the shortstop by Patrick Gaillard (Sr., SS, Taylors, S.C.).

The Flames broke the game open with five runs in the sixth. Gaillard led off the inning with an infield single. David Giammaresi (R-Jr., 3B, Coral Springs, Fla.) then hit a sharp grounder back to the Ram pitcher, who overthrew second in an attempt to get the advancing runner. Aaron Grijalva (R-Jr., 1B, Redlands, Calif.) followed with a double to deep center field to score Gaillard with the frame's first run. The next batter, Aaron Phillips, (Jr., 2B, Claremore, Okla.) cleared the bases with a two-run triple to the warning track in center field. A sacrifice fly by Kenneth Negron (So., LF, Kingwood, Tex.) brought home Phillips to make it, 7-1. Liberty added another run with two outs as John doubled to left field and scored on a single back up the middle by Young.

Flames starter Tyler Light (RHP, San Bernardino, Calif.) handcuffed the Rams through the first five innings, giving the Flames another strong outing from their mound staff. The sophomore allowed one run on five hits, striking out two and walking one, in running his mark 2-0 on the season. Light retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced.

In the bottom of the fifth, VCU plated a run for the eventual final of 8-2. The Flames' right fielder dropped a fly ball allowing second baseman Sergio Miranda to reach second base to lead off the stanza. Miranda moved to third on a ground out and came home on a bunt single placed down the third base line by Jared Holden.

Left-hander Ryan Page (Jr., Cranberry Twp., Pa.) came on for Light in the sixth and allowed an unearned run on two hits over 3 1/3 innings. Dane Beakler (So., RHP, York, Pa.) recorded the last two outs for the Flames. Starter Bill Wieland (0-1) took the loss for the Rams, yielding three runs on four hits over three innings as the first of six VCU pitchers in the game.

Besides Young's 4-for-5 afternoon, Grijalva and Phillips also had two hits apiece for the Flames. Three Rams had two hits each.

Liberty returns home Friday to begin a three-game weekend series with the Manhattan Jaspers. Friday's single game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
