Hunter Steward was one of Liberty's 10 players named to the Big South Preseason All-Conference team.

The top two preseason picks in the Big South Conference football poll matched each other with preseason all-conference selections, as Coastal Carolina and Liberty each had 10 players named to the preseason list that was announced earlier today.

The Big South Conference officially kicked off its 12th season of football with its annual Big South Football Media Day luncheon, held this year at the Charlotte Plaza Uptown Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.

Coastal Carolina and Liberty, picked to finish first and second, respectively, in the Big South Conference team poll, dominated the preseason all-conference team with a combined 20 of the 30 selections.

Five of Coastal Carolina's 10 picks were offensive selections, while Liberty had the same number of defensive players named to the preseason all-conference team.

Coastal Carolina also had both of the preseason Player of the Year selections. Senior wide receiver Matt Hazel was named the Big South Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and junior linebacker Quinn Backus was named the Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

Gardner-Webb was next on the list with seven preseason all-conference players, followed by two preseason picks from Charleston Southern and one from VMI. Presbyterian College did not have any players named to the Big South preseason all-conference team.

Liberty's Big South preseason all-conference selections included: Josh Woodrum (QB, R-So.), Hunter Steward (OL, Sr.), Cory Freeman (DL, Sr.), Francis Bah (DL, Sr.), Nick Sigmon (LB, Jr.), Walt Aikens (DB, Sr.), Kevin Fogg (DB, R-Sr.), John Lunsford (K, So.), Grant Bowden (Sr., P) and Richard Wright (LS, Sr.).

Liberty opens up its 2013 season with a Thursday evening game at Kent State on Aug. 29 on ESPN3 at Dix Stadium in Kent, Ohio.

The Flames will begin their Big South title defense against one of the two teams it shared the conference crown with last year. On Oct. 19, Liberty welcomes Coastal Carolina to Williams Stadium with the Homecoming contest slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
