Several Flames Included on Phil Steele Preseason Lists
Seniors Kevin Fogg and Richard Wright have been named to 2013 Phil Steele Preseason FCS All-American teams, while 13 players are among those listed by the organization in its preseason all-conference lists.
Both Fogg and Wright were named to the Phil Steele Preseason FCS All-American first-team listing, with Fogg grabbing a spot on the team as a kickoff return specialist and Wright at long snapper.
Liberty was the only Big South program to have two first-team honorees on the Phil Steele listing. Players from Gardner-Webb (one second-team and one fourth-team) and Coastal Carolina (both third-team) were also named to the FCS All-American listing.
The organization also released its 2013 FCS Preseason All-Conference listings with Liberty having 13 different players represented on the first and second-team listings. A dozen of Liberty 14 selections were named to the first-team listing (Fogg was named at two different positions).
Liberty led all Big South programs with its 14 preseason all-conference honorees, followed by 12 selections for Coastal Carolina (six first-team, six second-team) and Gardner-Webb (six first-team, six second-team).
Returning starting quarterback Josh Woodrum was named the organization's Big South Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. The preseason defensive honor went to Coastal Carolina junior linebacker Quinn Backus.
Liberty's first-team honorees on the Phil Steele Preseason All-Big South Conference teams include: Josh Woodrum (QB/So.), Hunter Steward (OL/Sr.), Mitch Hanson (OL/Jr.), Malcolm Boyd (OL/Sr.), Cory Freeman (DL/Sr.), Francis Bah (DL/Sr.), Nick Sigmon (LB/Jr.), Kevin Fogg (DB & KR/Sr.), Walt Aikens (DB/Sr.), John Lunsford (K/So.) and Grant Bowden (P/Sr.).
Liberty's second-team selection included linebacker Scott Hyland (Sr.) and safety Jacob Hagen (Jr.).
Liberty will open up its preseason training camp on July 31 in preparation for its 2013 season opener at Kent State on Aug. 29. The 6 p.m. contest at Dix Stadium in Kent, Ohio, will be broadcast on ESPN3.
The following weekend, Liberty will host the first of seven regular-season home games against future Big South foe Monmouth at Williams Stadium on Sept. 7 (7 p.m. kickoff).
