2013-14 Liberty Swimming Schedule
The 2013-14 Liberty swimming schedule, as released today by fourth-year head coach Jake Shellenberger, features five meets against major conference opponents. The Lady Flames' slate is highlighted by a pair of meets versus Vanderbilt of the SEC, a trip to face the Big Ten's Michigan State and Illinois and two meets at Virginia Tech.
Liberty opens the campaign by competing at the Virginia Tech Sprint Classic for the second year in a row, Oct. 11 in Christiansburg, Va. Last season, the Lady Flames posted five event victories at the Virginia Tech Sprint Classic.
The Lady Flames then travel to East Lansing, Mich., on Oct. 25, taking on the host Michigan State Spartans and Illinois, both of the Big Ten. This will mark Liberty's first regular-season meeting with teams from the Big Ten.
On Nov. 8, Liberty welcomes the SEC's Vanderbilt Commodores to the LaHaye Aquatics Center. The team's lone home meet of the season, it will be the Lady Flames' first-ever home contest against an SEC opponent. The next day, Nov. 9, Liberty heads to Richmond to take on the three-time defending Atlantic 10 champion, the Richmond Spiders.
Liberty wraps up the fall portion of its schedule by competing in the Virginia Tech Invitational at Christiansburg Aquatic Center for the second straight year, Nov. 21-23.
Members of the Lady Flames' swimming squad who meet qualifying standards will go to the USA Swimming Winter National Championships, held Dec. 5-7 in Knoxville, Tenn.
For the fourth season in a row, Liberty swimming will open the New Year with a training trip in Fort Myers, Fla., capped by a quad meet at conference foe Florida Gulf Coast on Jan. 4.
The Lady Flames will meet Vanderbilt for the second time on Jan. 18, this time competing at the Commodores' home facility in Nashville, Tenn. The meet will also include Marshall and West Florida.
Liberty closes out its 2013-14 regular-season schedule at the Davidson Duals on Feb. 1, and the team will look to sweep the competition for the third year in a row at the meet.
The squad has placed second at the CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships each of the last two seasons. Liberty will aim to challenge five-time defending champion Florida Gulf Coast at the 2014 CCSA Championships, from Feb. 20-22.
The 2014 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships will be held in Minneapolis, Minn., March 20-22. The Lady Flames have been represented at each of the last two NCAA national championships.
Following the collegiate season, members of the Liberty swimming team will have the opportunity to compete at the 2014 USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships, held in Irvine, Calif., Aug. 6-10.
