Nangle Hired as Second Lacrosse Head Coach
Kelly Nangle, current head coach at Central Connecticut State, has been hired as the second head coach in Liberty's lacrosse program history, as announced by Director of Athletics Jeff Barber earlier today.
Nangle takes over for Regan Denham, who helped start the program in 2009 and coached the Lady Flames for four seasons, before resigning from her position in May.
Nangle has spent the last two seasons at Central Connecticut State, helping the Blue Devils reach new heights during her two years in New Britain, Conn. She posted a 16-18 overall record and a 12-6 mark in Northeast Conference action.
Two years ago, Nangle helped Central Connecticut State tie a program record with seven victories, while setting new program standards with five NEC victories and six home wins. Nangle was recognized for her efforts, as she was named the 2012 NEC Coach of the Year and her senior keeper Erin DeLancey was selected the NEC Goalkeeper of the Year.
This past season, Nangle's squad finished second in the NEC with a 7-2 conference record. The Blue Devils made their first-ever appearance in the NEC Championship, advancing to the semifinal round.
Central Connecticut State posted a 9-9 overall record in 2012, surpassing the previous school record for overall wins. Six of Nangle's players earned All-NEC honors, which dramatically increased the program's record for all-conference honorees. Central Connecticut State had 11 total previous all-conference honorees in program history.
Prior to her head coaching position at Central Connecticut State, Nangle spent three years as an assistant coach at Rutgers (2009-11). She oversaw the Scarlet Knights' defense, while assisting with recruiting efforts and overseeing Rutgers team academics.
Rutgers posted a 27-21 record during her three seasons in Piscataway, N.J., maintaining a presence in the national rankings each year. The Scarlett Knights' defense improved each season under Nangle, spotlighted by a second-place finish in goals against average in the Big East during her final season with the program (9.06 in 2011).
In 2008, Nangle served as the head coach at St. John's Catholic Prep in Frederick, Md. She helped the Vikings increase their win total by four times during her once season, as St. John's Catholic was winless the year prior to her arrival. Two of her players earned all-conference honors, while two additional players received all-county recognition.
Nangle got her start in coaching at Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md., as a volunteer assistant coach in 2007. During her one year on staff with her alma mater, she worked specifically with The Mount's defensive units.
Nangle graduated from Mount St. Mary's in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in business with a marketing concentration.
During her time on the field with the Mountaineers, Nangle was a four-time All-NEC selection, including first-team honors one year.
The standout defender currently ranks second in Mount St. Mary's history in career ground balls (204), fourth in caused turnovers (116) and 16th in draw controls (65).
Following her senior season, Nangle was selected to play in the Division I North/South All-Star Game.
Nangle was the recipient of the John M. Kolon award, given to a Mount St. Mary's student-athlete who embodies hard work and dedication and has earned the respect and admiration of fellow athletes and coaches.
Nangle was also a member of Mount St. Mary's "40 for 40" class, a distinguished group of former female student-athletes that have left their mark with The Mount, as well as following graduation.
During her time at Mount St. Mary's, Nangle was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Captain Leadership Board.
In addition to her collegiate involvement in lacrosse, Nangle has served as the head coach at Ultimate NJ and Girls Club teams.
She has also worked numerous camps and clinics, including Maximum Exposure Lacrosse (2010-present), C2 Lacrosse Camp (2002-05), Rapid Fire Lacrosse Camp (2006) and Top215 (2012-present).
Director of Athletics Jeff Barber on hiring Kelly Nangle:
"We are very excited to have Kelly take over our lacrosse program. She brings great experience to us from the Division I level and has certainly proven herself to be a winner both on the field and off."
"Kelly has a passion for the sport of lacrosse and also in the teaching and development of young women in their academic, athletic and spiritual lives."
Head Coach Kelly Nangle on Taking Head Coaching Position:
"I want to thank Liberty University Director of Athletics Jeff Barber and Senior Woman Administrator Erin McKeown for giving me this opportunity. I am very excited to be joining the Liberty Athletics family. Liberty's women's lacrosse program has grown so much during the last several years. I can't wait to get started and continue to build on that success."
