Roy's Outing Highlights 3-1 Senior Day Victory over Radford
Senior right-hander Brooks Roy pitched seven strong innings, helping the Liberty Flames defeat the Radford Highlanders, 3-1, on Senior Day in a Big South Conference contest at Liberty Baseball Stadium, Friday.
Pitching for the last time in the regular season in a Liberty uniform, Roy allowed only one run on five hits over the first seven innings to move to 7-5 on the year. With the win, the senior now leads the Flames' pitching staff in wins this season. Roy struck out four and walked three batters.
Ashton Perritt closed out the contest with two scoreless innings to earn his fifth save of the season. The right-hander gave up one hit and struck out one batter. Perritt started the game in left field for the Flames, collecting two hits, scoring two runs and stealing a base. In 29 games this season, Perrit has recorded 15-multiple hit games.
Liberty moves to 12-11 in Big South play and 28-26 overall. The win snaps a five-game losing skid for the Flames. Radford drops to 14-9 in conference play and 29-23 overall.
Before the game, the eight seniors on Liberty's roster were honored. Besides Roy, second baseman Bryan Aanderud, outfielder Justin Sizemore, third baseman Dalton Sype, catcher Trey Wimmer and pitchers Patrick Bankemper, Justin Gunn and Kody Young were recognized. All eight are playing in their final regular season games in a Flames' uniform this weekend.
After Perritt threw out Radford catcher Josh Reavis at home plate trying to score to end the top of the game's opening inning, Liberty struck for two runs in the bottom of the first. Perritt opened the frame with a single to right field and two batters later, advanced to third on a single by Wimmer. Designated hitter Danny Grauer and Aanderud each followed with run-scoring singles for a 2-0 Flames' advantage.
In the top of the fifth, Radford plated its lone run of the game. Center fielder Blake Sipe walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Chris Coia. Two batters later, Reavis dropped a two-out single into center field to score Sipe, cutting the Liberty edge to 2-1.
In the bottom of the inning, the Flames answered, scoring a run in an unconventional manner. With one out, Perritt singled and stole second. Center fielder Ryan Cordell then lifted a fly ball to wall in left field. Perritt tagged at second and came all the way around to score, beating a throw to the plate, for what proved to be the final score of 3-1.
Radford starter Michael Boyle falls to 5-3 on the season. The left-hander allowed three runs on five hits. He struck out one and walked one.
Liberty collected six hits in the game. Grauer joined Perritt with two hits in the contest.
Radford also had six hits in the contest. Reavis had two hits for the Highlanders.
The Flames and Highlanders will meet in the final game of their three-game series and the final contest of the 2013 regular season, tomorrow at Liberty Baseball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
