Jarda Trojan won his fifth-consecutive doubles match.

Jarda Trojan won his fifth-consecutive doubles match.

Sparked by the fifth-consecutive win from its top doubles pairing, the Liberty Flames men's tennis team opened their home outdoor schedule on Friday with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Virginia Intermont.

Despite the fifth-straight win from Jarda Trojan and Chad Simpson, Liberty dropped two out of the three doubles contests to Intermont, currently listed 12th in the NAIA rankings. In singles, however, the Flames rallied, winning the top three matches in straight sets. The contest came down to the final match, in which Fabricio Picanco prevailed when his opponent was forced to retire.

The Flames' victory avenges last season's loss to Intermont, a 4-3 defeat in Lynchburg. It also gives Liberty three wins on the season, allowing it to top last season's victory total. The Flames, who now have a 3-2 record on the season, return to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Buies Creek, N.C., to take on Campbell. Match time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
