Layer Signs Retic to National Letter of Intent
Head Liberty Men's Basketball Coach Dale Layer has announced the signing of Joe Retic II (G, 6-3, 190, Fishers, Ind.) to a National Letter of Intent for the 2013-14 academic year.
Retic makes his way to the Hill City after playing one year at Owens Community College in Perrysburg, Ohio. During his freshman season at Owens, the point guard started all 36 contests, averaging 11.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, while pacing the Express in assists with 5.1 per contest.
"Joe is a great fit for our team," Layer stated. "He is competitive, experienced and tough. He played at a high level in leading his team to 26 wins. We are getting a very good person, player and student to add to the point guard position. We are looking forward to having him for the next three years."
Thanks in part to Retic's leadership, the Express went 26-10 and finished fourth at the NJCAA National Tournament. During the team's tournament run, he led the team in scoring, averaging 20.0 ppg to earn a spot on the NJCAA All-Tournament Team.
"Joe is an outstanding student and person," Owens head coach David Clarke noted. "Joe had a great basketball season, but he also grew as a young man at Owens. Liberty is getting a player that will graduate with a college degree and be an extremely successful person in life. I am very pleased to have coached Joe in basketball, but I am more excited that Joe has reached his dream to play Division I basketball."
Prior to his time at Owens, Retic was a letterwinner at Fishers High School, where he played under the tutelage of head coach Joe Leonard. Retic chose Liberty over University of Illinois at Chicago, Bowling Green State University, IUPUI, Chicago State, and Washington State.
