Williams, Nicholson Go 1-2 in Discus at Radford

Jocelyn Williams won the women's discus title at the Highlander Invitational on Friday.

Liberty's Jocelyn Williams and Jennifer Nicholson swept the top two places in the women's discus, highlighting a light Friday of action at the Highlander Invitational at Cupp Stadium.

Williams, the Big South women's discus runner-up, recorded her winning throw of 153-3 in the fourth round. Meanwhile, Big South third-place finisher Nicholson topped out at 152-1 to earn the runner-up spot.

Shelley Parker came in third in the women's pole vault after clearing a season-best 11-9 on her second attempt. She defeated newly-crowned Big South champion Kate Collins of VMI, who needed a third try to get over 11-9.

Melissa Rohwer was the Lady Flames' top long jumper on the day, leaping 18-3.25 for fourth place. Christina Mitchell also notched a fourth-place finish, thanks to a 118-3 javelin throw.

On the men's side, Cody Fridgen and Jacob DeValve each came in fifth in their respective events. Fridgen pole vaulted 14-9, while DeValve heaved the javelin 169-0.

Saturday's events will begin with the men's discus and women's shot put at 9 a.m. Track action will commence at noon, when the gun goes off for the men's 4 x 100 relay.
