Richardson Throws Complete-Game Shutout in 4-0 Liberty Win
Pitcher Josh Richardson pitched a complete-game shutout and catcher Trey Wimmer hit his third home run of the year, leading the Liberty Flames to a 4-0 victory over the VMI Keydets in a Big South Conference contest, Friday evening at Gray-Minor Stadium.
Making only his second start of 2013 and the third of his career, Richardson was in command throughout the contest. He faced the minimum 21 batters through the first seven innings, as the only hitter to reach, Keydet left fielder Jordan Tarsovich, was thrown out trying to steal in the fourth inning. The right-hander evens his record at 2-2, shutting out VMI on three hits in pitching the first complete game in his career. He struck out a career-high eight batters and did not walk a batter.
Wimmer gave Liberty a 1-0 advantage in the game's opening inning. With two outs, Wimmer belted his third home run of the season off the scoreboard in left-center field for an early Flames' lead.
In taking the first game of the three-game series, Liberty moves to 9-7 in the Big South action and 24-20 overall. VMI drops to 5-11 in conference and 19-27 overall.
The Flames added to their lead in their next at bat with three runs. First baseman Alex Close led off the top of the second inning with a single to left field. Two batters later, third baseman Jake Kimble lined a double into the left corner, plating Close with the first run of the frame.
Shortstop Dalton Britt followed by ripping a triple into the right field corner to give Liberty a 3-0 edge. After the second batter of the inning was retired, Britt scored on a single by second baseman Bryan Aanderud for what proved to be the final score of 4-0.
VMI starter Connor Bach falls to 2-4 on the year. The left-hander gave up four runs on eight hits over seven innings. He walked three and did not strike out a batter.
Liberty had nine hits during the contest. Aanderud paced the Flames with three hits, extending his career-high hitting streak to 14 games. His hit streak ties Wimmer for the longest consecutive game hitting streak by a Flame this season.
Liberty and VMI will meet again tomorrow in a doubleheader due to rain in the forecast for the area on Sunday. First pitch for game one will start at 2 p.m.
