Coastal Carolina Rallies for 5-1 Win at Liberty

Hanna Nichols singled and scored Liberty's lone run during game one of a doubleheader against Coastal Carolina on Friday.

Liberty and Coastal Carolina played four scoreless innings before the visiting Chanticleers registered two homers during a four-run fifth, posting a 5-1 victory over the Lady Flames during Friday's series opener.

Coastal Carolina boosts its record to 32-20, including 17-5 in Big South contests. The Lady Flames' record now stands at 19-31, with an 8-14 league mark following their 10th setback in a row.

Kiana Quolas (20-9) picked up her 20th win on the season, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five. Quolas also batted 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs.

Chandler Ball (8-14) yielded five runs (three earned) on just four hits, striking out four and walking five during a complete-game effort.

Cacia Pierre went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, as Pierre and Quolas were the only two Chanticleers to record hits off of Ball.

For the Lady Flames, Hanna Nichols singled and scored Liberty's lone run, while Kassidy McCoy hit 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Kelby Allen added a single and a stolen base.

Leadoff batter Bri Chiusano was hit by a pitch to start the game, went to second on a groundout and then stole third. Ball got the final two outs on a strikeout and a lineout, keeping the game scoreless.

The Lady Flames also advanced a runner to third base during the opening stanza. Katie Zavodny hit a leadoff single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a flyout. Amber Donovan then flied out to left, ending the inning.

Allen singled to begin the bottom of the second, and stole second. She then took third on a groundout, but was left on base when Megan Robinson struck out.

Coastal Carolina recorded its first hit of the game when Pierre singled to lead off the fourth inning. After pinch runner Sara Rasley advanced to third with two outs, Ball fanned Paige Goldsack, bringing the rally to a close.

The visitors surged ahead with a four-run fifth inning. Brooke Donovan walked, and Jessie Winans reached on an error. Quolas connected for her 11th round tripper of the season, giving Coastal Carolina a 3-0 edge with one out. Following a flyout by Kory Hayden, Pierre hit a solo shot to center, her eighth homer of the season.
Quolas worked around a single by Blair Lawrence in the fifth to keep Liberty off the scoreboard.

The Lady Flames went in order during the bottom of the sixth, leaving the score 4-0. Quolas then doubled to open the seventh frame. Hayden moved the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt, and Pierre then grounded out, pushing across the Chanticleers' fifth run.

Nichols hit a one-out single to left during Liberty's last at bat. McCoy lined a double to the wall in center, scoring Nichols and trimming the deficit to 5-1. Quolas then got the final two outs on a strikeout and a lineout.
