Virginia Posts 7-3 Victory at Liberty
The visiting Virginia Cavaliers scored four first-inning runs on their way to a 7-3 victory over the Liberty Lady Flames during game one on Wednesday at Liberty Softball Field.
With the win, the Cavaliers snap their six-game winless streak, improving to 19-25 on the season. The Lady Flames are now 19-29 heading into Wednesday's second game after dropping their eighth straight decision.
During the opener, Katie Zavodny stole her 40th base of the season, breaking Stacy Radulovich's (1996) single-season program record of 39. Sammi Shivock homered, giving her seven for the season and 22 for her career. Shivock is now tied with Dawn Jeffs (2006-07) for ninth in program history for career homers.
Seven different Cavaliers recorded one hit apiece, with Peyton Larus plating two runs with a double and Megan Harris hitting a two-run home run.

Chandler Ball (8-13) drew the loss after giving up seven runs, five earned on seven hits, striking out five and walking four in seven innings of work.
The Cavaliers jumped ahead early, pushing across four runs during the first inning. After the first two batters recorded singles, Karli Johnson hit an RBI groundout. Marcy Bowdren then scored on a passed ball. After a single and an error, Larus laced a double to left center, plating two additional runs for a 4-0 Virginia lead. Heidi Velk then lined out to end the inning.
Mitchell worked around a two-out double by Hanna Nichols in the bottom of the second, keeping Liberty off the scoreboard.
Virginia added one tally to its advantage during the visitors' half of the fourth, when Shannon McGinley singled through the left side with two outs, scoring Larus.
Shivock lined a shot over the fence in straightaway center to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. Kelby Allen hit a one-out double down the left field line, and scored on a single by Amber Donovan. Donovan's RBI base hit trimmed the deficit to three, 5-2.
The visitors answered Liberty's two fourth-inning tallies with two runs of their own during the next half inning. Johnson walked and scored, when Harris launched a round tripper to right center, boosting Virginia's lead to 7-2.
The Lady Flames rallied in the fifth. Lawrence reached on an error and Zavodny singled to put runners on the corners. Lawrence then scored on a double-steal play, making it 7-3. Mitchell fanned two out of the next three batters, bringing the stanza to a close.
After a six-batter sixth inning, Ball held the Cavaliers scoreless in the top of the seventh. Mitchell then struck out the side during Liberty's last time at bat, sealing the 7-3 UVA victory.
