Lady Flames Fall to Longwood in Regular-Season Finale

Nina Dunay tallied a team-high four goals on Saturday for the Lady Flames.

Despite four goals from Liberty midfielder Nina Dunay, the Liberty Lady Flames dropped their regular-season finale, 19-12, to the Longwood Lancers on Saturday afternoon at the Longwood Athletics Complex. Liberty falls to 8-9 overall on the season and 4-3 in Big South contests. The win improves Longwood's overall record to 10-7 (5-2 Big South).

The Lady Flames grabbed the first three draws of the contest and turned them into three quick goals. Morgan Becker notched Liberty's first tally 57 seconds into the match. Sam Struss followed Becker's goal with her first marker of the contest a mere 46 seconds later. The Lady Flames pushed their advantage to 3-0 at the 26:37 mark of the opening half, after Dunay tallied her first score of the game.

Longwood gained its first possession of the game with 4:24 elapsed in the opening stanza. The Lancers turned the possession into their first score of the game to pull within two, 3-1.

Becker responded with her second tally of the match with 21:47 remaining in the first half to increase Liberty's edge back to three, 4-1.

Back-to-back scores by Longwood trimmed Liberty's advantage to one, 4-3. With 17:25 left in the opening half, Dunay fired a shot past Lancers' goalkeeper Christian Acker into the back of the net. Dunay's second marker of the contest made the score 5-3 in favor of the visitors.

Longwood held the Lady Flames scoreless over the final minutes of the first half, despite allowing nine more shots. The Lancers ended the half on a 4-0 run to take a 7-5 advantage into the halftime break.

Liberty started the second half strong, scoring two quick goals to tie the game at seven apiece. Dunay weaved her way to the front of the goal and flicked the ball over Acker into the top of the net for her third score of the game. Jen Freymond followed by bouncing the tying goal into the net with 3:21 elapsed in the second frame.

The Lancers seized control of the game by reeling off six goals in just over eight minutes of action. Struss ended Longwood's run with her second tally of the game off of a free-position attempt at the 17:52 mark of the final half, making the score 13-8 in favor of the home team.

After Longwood found the back of the net for the 14th time on the afternoon, the Lady Flames' Becker notched her third goal of the game off of an assist from Amber Nichols with 13:32 remaining in the contest to trim the deficit to five, 14-9. 

The Lancers tallied the next five goals of the game, extending their lead to 10, 19-9.

Liberty tallied the final three scores of the game, as Struss, Dunay and Candice Parsons each found the back of the net, but it was not enough as Longwood claimed the 19-12 win.

For the contest, the Lady Flames outshot the Lancers, 31-29. Both teams scooped up 21 ground balls, while the home team held the slight edge in draw controls, 17-16. Liberty was successful on nine of 10 clear attempts, compared to 14 of 16 successful clears for Longwood.

In goal, the Lady Flames' Kristen Masullo stopped seven shots, while Longwood's Acker finished the game with 14 saves. 

With the regular season complete, Liberty turns its focus to the Big South Lacrosse Championship, which begins on Friday at Davidson College. Final seedings and game times will be announced tomorrow.
