Spartans Down Liberty, 8-0

Amber Donovan had a hit during Wednesday's second game at UNCG.

The host UNCG Spartans posted an 8-0, six-inning victory over visiting Liberty during game two, earning a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday at UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans are now 27-10 following the win over the Lady Flames, while Liberty falls to 17-20 on the season with the setback.

UNCG held Liberty to just three hits, as Erica Navarette (5-4) and Kelly Lupton combined for the shutout. Navarette yielded two hits in four innings of work, while Lupton allowed one hit over the final two innings.

Alyssa DiMartino (0-5) drew the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings, while Kenzie Friesen pitched 3 2/3 stanzas, allowing four runs on two hits and four walks.

Katie Zavodny batted 1-for-2 for the Lady Flames, and stole her 31st base of the season. Kelby Allen and Amber Donovan added hits, with Allen registering a double.

For UNCG, Tatiana Alcala and Allison Geiner both went 2-for-2, while Geiner scored two runs. Heather Robb homered for the second game in a row, and tallied two runs.

Allen doubled during the top of the first inning, but a popout by Hanna Nichols brought Liberty's first at bat to a close.

UNCG jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Robb led off the stanza with a solo homer to center field. Three singles loaded the bases, before a walk to Aisha Figueroa plated UNCG's second run. After Geiner scored on a wild pitch, Katelyn Bedwell made it 4-0 with an RBI single. Friesen then entered the circle, and got the final out on a popout.

Ater a scoreless third inning, UNCG rallied for a run during the fourth. Geiner singled as the leadoff batter, and made it to third on two groundouts before scoring on a wild pitch.

The Spartans tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on second and third, Chelsea Strandlund reached on a fielder's choice, as Robb beat Nichols' throw home, good for a 6-0 UNCG advantage.
Zavodny singled and stole second during the top of the sixth, but was left there after a popout by Allen ended the rally.

UNCG's seventh run of the game scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth, and then Eileen Horsmon plated Kiah Ruffin with a game-ending fielder's choice for the 8-0 final score.

The Lady Flames return home for a Big South weekend series against Gardner-Webb, Friday and Saturday. Friday's doubleheader at Liberty Softball Field will begin at 2 p.m., while Liberty will take on the Runnin' Bulldogs in a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
