Wimmer Added to Johnny Bench Award Watch List
Liberty catcher Trey Wimmer has been added to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced today.
The award honors annually the nation's top collegiate catcher based on athletic ability, sportsmanship, team leadership and character. Three semifinalists will be determined in May by a selection committee and a vote of all Division I head coaches, held during the College World Series, will determine the award's recipient.
Wimmer enters tonight's contest against James Madison at the Liberty Baseball Stadium, leading the Flames in batting average (.345), RBIs (25) and runs scored (22). The two-time Liberty team captain also paces the Flames in slugging percentage (.543) and on-base percentage (.412).
In addition, he ranks among the Big South Conference leaders in several categories. The senior from Greenwood, S.C., is currently fifth in slugging percentage and seventh in RBIs. His 11 doubles tie him for fifth and his 63 total bases place him seventh in the conference. The catcher is also one of the Big South's better hitters with runners on base, ranking third with a .451 average, and in RBI opportunities with a .471 average.
Defensively, Wimmer has thrown out 53 percent (11/21) of base runners attempting to steal and posted a .991 fielding percentage this season.
Wimmer was selected the Big South Conference Baseball Player of the Week for games played Feb. 18-24. The catcher hit .667 (6-for-9) with six RBIs, three doubles and two triples in leading the Flames to a three-game sweep of Penn State during the opening weekend of the Liberty Baseball Stadium, Feb. 22-24.
Off the field, Wimmer has been a four-year member of Liberty's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and this year is the committee's president. Last May, Wimmer was named the Liberty Athletics Department's Dr. Jerry Falwell Leadership Award recipient. The award is given to one male and one female student-athlete who have exemplified Dr. Falwell's vision through leadership, commitment to academics, athletic talent and service to others.
Wimmer and the Flames will host the James Madison Dukes at Liberty Baseball Stadium, this evening. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
