Lady Flames Face Richmond in Regular Season Finale, Tuesday
The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team wraps up the 2013 regular season on Tuesday with a road non-conference match against the Richmond Spiders at 2 p.m.
The Lady Flames will look to get back in the win column after a pair of tough defeats over the weekend to Marshall and Charleston Southern. The losses dropped Liberty to 10-9 (6-3 Big South) on the year. The Lady Flames currently sit in fourth place in the conference, trailing Winthrop, Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina.
Liberty currently has two players with double-digit singles wins on the season. Nicola Wellman tops the team with 11 victories, while freshman Valerie Thong has 10 tallies. In Big South matches, Wellman and Thong finished a combined 13-3. In doubles competition, the Lady Flames have been very strong in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. In the No. 2 spot, Brittany Yang and Jessie Boda are 13-5, while Thong and Cameron Richard have a 12-5 record in the No. 3 slot. Overall, Liberty is 50-55 in singles matches and 33-22 in doubles contests.
Tuesday's match will be the third meeting all-time between Liberty and Richmond. Richmond won the previous two meetings, including a close 4-3 victory last year in Lynchburg.
The Spiders are 7-11 (3-0 A-10) overall on the season. Richmond has won two in a row and four out of its last five matches. Melissa Kandinata has a team-best eight singles wins, while Katya Salas and Emily Gitman are tied for second with seven victories each. The Spiders' doubles combination of Anna Abadias Morales and Gitman pace the team with a 6-3 mark. As a team, Richmond is 37-68 in singles matches and 19-28 in doubles play.
After tomorrow's match, the Lady Flames will begin to make preparations for the Big South Championship, which opens on April 17 in Rock Hill, S.C. Seedings and match times will be released at a later date.
