Liberty Falls to Campbell, 4-3
The Liberty softball team took a 3-2 lead during the top of the fifth inning at Campbell, but the host Camels came back to defeat the Lady Flames, 4-3, during game one on Friday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
With the win, Campbell is now 21-12 on the season, including 5-2 in Big South play. Liberty's record stands at 14-13, 3-2 in conference action, heading into Friday's second game. The Lady Flames' three-game winning streak came to an end.
Sammi Shivock batted 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for the Lady Flames. Katie Zavodny extended her hitting streak to 19 games, and stole her career-high 27th base of the season. Hanna Nichols went 1-for-3 with a double.
For Campbell, Stephanie Jones hit 3-for-3, while Courtney Klingler hit a two-run homer and Raven Lee drove in two runs with a double. Klingler and Brittany Bruce both scored two runs.
Courtney Roberts (10-4) struck out 12 batters in going the distance, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits. She tossed three strikeouts in the second and sixth innings.
Chandler Ball (5-7) yielded four runs on seven hits and struck out two batters in six innings pitched.
The Camels threatened to score during the first inning, as Jones led off with a single, and made it to third on a fielder's choice. Jones was then thrown out at the plate on a grounder to second base, keeping the game scoreless.
Campbell took the lead with a two-run third inning. Jones singled and stole second to lead off the inning. After a fielder's choice, Klingler hit a high drive over the fence in left, giving the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
Liberty sliced the deficit in half when Shivock went deep with her third homer of the season, a one-out solo shot to left during the top of the fourth.
The Lady Flames went ahead in the top of the fifth inning. Megan Robinson singled with one out, and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Zavodny hit a single, and then swiped second. Following a walk to Amber Donovan to load the bases, Shivock was hit by a pitch, tying the game at 2-2. McCoy then reached on an error by the shortstop, and Zavodny scored to make it 3-2. Roberts then struck out Kelby Allen, ending Liberty's fifth time at bat.
Campbell responded in the bottom of the fifth. A single and a stolen base by Bruce, followed by an intentional walk to Klingler, put two runners on with two outs. Lee then doubled to center, plating a pair for a 4-3 Campbell advantage.
The guests had a quality scoring chance in the top of the sixth, when Nichols doubled to open the frame. Pinch runner Jill Stephens went to third on a wild pitch, but Roberts fanned the next three Lady Flames in order, keeping the score at 4-3.
After a 1-2-3 Campbell sixth, the Lady Flames got a baserunner in the top of the seventh when Shivock singled with two outs. Roberts got the final out on a groundout, sealing the one-run victory for the Camels.
