Lady Flames Roll Past Radford, 6-1
The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team swept through the doubles matches, before winning five out of the six singles contests en route to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Radford Highlanders on Wednesday afternoon at the Hershey Tennis Courts.
The win improves the Lady Flames record to 8-7 (5-2 Big South) on the season. The loss drops Radford to 3-11 (0-4 Big South) overall.
Brittany Yang and Jessie Boda continued their solid play in doubles action this year. The Lady Flames' No. 2 tandem blanked Taylor Newman and Hana Babic 8-0, for their team-best 11th doubles victory of the season.
Cameron Richard and Valerie Thong followed up Yang and Boda's win with an 8-4 triumph over Megan Napolitano and Allison Michael in the No. 3 position. Richard and Thong's ninth victory of the season as a pair clinched the match's doubles tally for Liberty.
Liberty breezed through the singles matches in the No. 3-6 positions. Wellman ousted Babic, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 3 spot. The sophomore's team-high ninth singles victory of the year increased the Lady Flames' advantage to 2-0.
Making her first start of the year in the No. 5 position, Yang defeated Fay in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Annisha Domenech wrapped up her match in the No. 6 position without dropping a game to Michael, 6-0, 6-0, pushing Liberty's lead to 4-0 and giving the home team the victory.
Thong delivered the Lady Flames fourth straight-set victory of the afternoon, downing Napolitano, 6-0, 6-2, for her seventh singles win of the year.
The Highlanders lone victory of the day came in the No. 1 position, as Newman knocked off Richard, 6-3, 6-3.
Jenkins notched the home team's sixth point of the day with a victory in the No. 2 spot. The junior ousted Valls, 6-4, 7-5, matching Thong for the second most singles wins on the team with seven.
"I'm very pleased with the consistent effort that we had in our doubles and singles contests today," commented Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "We did a great job of reducing our unforced errors across the board and playing aggressively throughout the match. Rebekah played an excellent match today against a player that had previously beaten her. She fought very hard on the court and structured her points for her benefit. It was a great match in preparation for tomorrow's conference match against Presbyterian."
The Lady Flames return to action tomorrow at home against Presbyterian College. Match time versus the Blue Hose is scheduled for 1 p.m.
