Liberty Loses at George Mason on Wednesday, 14-9
The Liberty Lady Flames lacrosse team was not able to overcome an early 8-0 run by George Mason, falling to the Patriots by a final score of 14-9, Wednesday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
The Lady Flames fall to 4-5 overall, while the Patriots even their season record at 4-4.
Liberty gained the early advantage with 26:13 showing on the first-half clock. Morgan Becker worked her way into a shooting position from behind the net and fired home her 14th goal of the season to put the Lady Flames on top 1-0.
After the Liberty marker, George Mason quickly seized control of the contest, going on an 8-0 first-half run. Allie Hilderbrandt, Katie Mascolo and Caitlin Formato each scored two goals during the stretch for the Patriots.
Liberty's Kacie Fogle ended their host's scoring run with a goal off of a free-position attempt at the 8:03 mark of the opening stanza. Folge's seventh goal of the year cut the George Mason advantage to 8-2.
The Lady Flames' defense held George Mason scoreless for the remainder of the half, as Liberty went into the break trailing 8-2.
The Lady Flames came out strong in the second half, scoring twice in the first 3:21. Jen Freymond fired home her 11th goal of the year, before Amber Nichols notched her fifth tally of the year, trimming the Patriots' lead to 8-4.
George Mason pushed the lead back to five goals at 9-4, before Nichols scored her second marker of the game with 25:20 showing on the second-half clock.
The Patriots tallied the contest's next four markers to increase their lead to 13-5 with just under
13 minutes remaining in the second stanza.
After a George Mason foul at the 11:54 mark of the second half, Liberty's Freymond whipped a goal into the top of the net off of a free position attempt. The tri-captain's second marker in the game pulled the Lady Flames within seven at 13-6.
Rachel Obregon tallied the Patriots final score of the contest with 10 minutes remaining in the final stanza.
The Lady Flames tried to rally netting the game's final three goals in the last three minutes of the contest. Becker scored her second and third tallies of the game to push her past Nina Dunay for the team lead in goals with 16. Freymond notched her third goal of the contest in the waning seconds of the game, making the final score 14-9, George Mason.
The Lady Flames held the overall edge in draw controls, 13-12, and was a perfect 4-4 on free position shots. George Mason outshot Liberty 33-24 and was successful on 16-of-18 clear attempts. Liberty went 11-of-14. Both teams finished the contest with 17 ground balls and eight caused turnovers.
In goal, Kristen Masullo notched five saves for the Lady Flames, before giving way to Kristin Boland mid-way through the second half. Boland tallied three saves in just her third game of the year. Caroline Brouse and Brittany Pastrana combined to make 11 stops between the pipes for the Patriots.
Liberty will have a 10-day break, before its next contest on March 30 against Davidson at the Liberty Lacrosse Field. The Lady Flames' Big South opener is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and kicks off a string of five games in nine days.
