Nordan's Walk-Off RBI Gives Liberty 6-5, 8-Inning Win Over Temple
Liberty scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, with Grace Nordan recording an RBI base on balls to provide the winning score, as the Lady Flames downed Temple, 6-5, Saturday at E.C. Moore Softball Complex.
With the win, Liberty's second walk-off victory of the season, the Lady Flames improve their record to 9-11. Coincidentally, Nordan hit a walk-off home run in the eighth inning of a 9-8 win over Fairfield on Feb. 22. Temple falls to 6-12 on the campaign.
Amber Donovan went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Katie Zavodny went 1-for-4 with a stolen base, extending her hitting streak to 12 games. Megan Robinson, Holly Seiz and Kassidy McCoy all recorded an RBI, while Blair Lawrence scored two runs.
Stephanie Pasquale batted 3-for-4 for the Owls, while Sarah Prezioso hit a home run and Kelsey Dominik went 2-for-4.
Chandler Ball (4-5) earned the win, pitching 2 2/3 innings of relief, while allowing one unearned run on one hit. Starting pitcher Kenzie Friesen went three innings, yielding two runs on four hits. Anna Jo Brittingham then pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits.
Dominik (3-1) went the distance in the circle for Temple, giving up six runs, three earned, while allowing seven hits and four walks and striking out six.
Liberty took a quick, 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lawrence walked and stole second. After advancing to third on a groundout, Lawrence scored when Donovan doubled to center.
With runners on the corners and two outs in the top of the second, Julia Kastner tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single. Friesen then got the next two batters to pop out, ending the inning.
Temple took the lead for the first time when Pasquale plated Ali Robinson with a two-out RBI single, making it 2-1 in the top of the third.
The Lady Flames battled back into the lead with a two-run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. Shivock and Donovan singled, back-to-back, to open the frame. After a sacrifice bunt, Shivock scored on a sacrifice fly by Seiz. McCoy then put Liberty ahead, 3-2, with an RBI single.
Prezioso hit a one-out, solo home run in the top of the fifth, knotting the game at 3-3.
The game continued to go back and forth, as Temple regained the advantage in the top of the sixth. After Dominik reached on a two-base error, Kayla Cook doubled to center, giving the Owls a 4-3 lead. Annie Marcoplous followed with a double, but Cook was held at third. Ball then came on in relief. After an error loaded the bases, Ball got Robinson to hit into a 1-2-3 double play, ending the threat.
Liberty tied up the score when Donovan hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the game went into the eighth.
With the International tiebreaker in effect, Temple only managed to score one run in the top of the eighth, when Brooklin White scored from third on a wild pitch. Ball then struck out Cook and got Marcopolus to ground out, leaving Dominik on third.
The Lady Flames rallied for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Donovan reached base on a fielder's choice, as Lawrence beat the throw to third. Robinson then drove in Lawrence with a bunt, tying the score. After Seiz flied out to right, Dominik walked McCoy to load the bases. Dominik then walked Nordan on five pitches, pushing Donovan across with the winning tally.
Liberty will next play against the Maine Black Bears this evening, at 6:15 p.m., at the E.C. Moore Softball Complex.
