Jorge Azuero earned his eighth singles win of the season on Thursday.

The Liberty Flames men's tennis team concluded its Spring Break trip on Thursday afternoon by being edged by Hawaii, 4-3, at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Flames suffer back-to-back defeats for the first time this season, dropping their record to 9-3 (2-0 Big South) overall. The Warriors improve to 4-8 with the victory.

The afternoon began with Hawaii winning the first two doubles matches to earn the contest's doubles tally. In the No. 1 position, Shea Thomas and Egon Samaai were seeking to become the first Liberty doubles pair to reach 10 wins this season. Their bid fell just short, as the Warriors' Jonathan Brooklyn and Dmytro Kovalyov downed the Flames' tandem by a final score of 8-5.

Liberty's Siim Tuus and Stan Vaughan were defeated by Jared Spiker and David Schuster, 8-1, in the No. 3 spot. With the doubles point already clinched, the match in the No. 2 position between the Flames' Jorge Azuero and Dillon Segur and the Warriors' Carter Lam and Nils Schuhmann went unfinished.

In singles play, both teams collected three wins apiece, with Liberty earning victories in the No. 1, 2, and 4 positions.

Tuus and Thomas returned to their winning ways, after both players dropped their singles tilts the day before against Idaho. Tuus downed Brooklyn in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to up his singles mark on the season to 9-2. Thomas collected his team-leading 10th singles victory, with a 6-3, 7-5 downing of Spiker.

In the No. 4 spot, Azuero rebounded from his first singles loss of the season on Wednesday, with a straight-set win over Chas Okamoto, 6-4, 6-2.

Segur took the first set from Kovalyov, 7-5, but the Warriors' No. 3 player came from behind to take the final two sets, 6-1, 6-3, to earn the victory.

In the No. 5 position, Vaughan fell to Schuster, 6-3, 6-0, while Hawaii's Danilo Casanova downed Samaai, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 6 spot.

"They don't get any closer than today," mentioned Liberty head coach Chris Johnson. "Our guys played really hard. This has been a great trip all around for our team."

The Flames return to Lynchburg for a March 19th contest against Charlotte. Match time against the 49ers is slated for 3 p.m. at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts.
