Spending Spring Break at the Beach
After competing in the Coastal Carolina Invitational last weekend, the Liberty men's and women's track & field teams stayed in Myrtle Beach. The Flames and Lady Flames have trained in the area during Spring Break week. They also cheered the Liberty men's and women's basketball teams on to victory at the Big South Basketball Championships at The HTC Center in Conway, S.C., on Sunday.
Liberty got the 2013 outdoor track & field season off to a strong start at last weekend's Coastal Carolina Invitational, winning five events and recording 10 IC4A/ECAC-qualifying performances.
Liberty's event champions included Brittany Crittenden (open women's long jump), Mychelle Cumings (women's discus), Josh MacDonald (men's steeplechase), Christina Mitchell (women's javelin) and the men's 4 x 800 relay quartet of Paul Arslain, Jarred Cornfield, John Sherret and Isaac Wendland.
ECAC qualifiers went to Cumings, Mitchell, Meredith Mistretta (10K), Jennifer Nicholson (discus) and Jocelyn Williams (discus). Meanwhile, Flames qualifying for the IC4A meet included MacDonald, Jacob DeValve (shot put), Daniel Klase (javelin), Kyle Wheeler (high jump) and the 4 x 400 relay squad (Andre Washington, Tyler Weigandt, Kyle Gill, Paul Arslain).
Through the extremely early stages of the 2013 outdoor season, MacDonald (men's steeplechase-8:57.26) and Mistretta (women's 10K-37:24.78) rank No. 1 nationally in their respective events.
On a Roll
Junior Josh MacDonald has been one of Liberty's most impressive performers of late, recording notable performances during each of the last three weeks.
On Feb. 22, MacDonald won his first career Big South individual title, claiming victory in the 5K with a time of 14:27.62.
On March 2, he placed third in the IC4A 5K final, dropping his personal-best time to 14:10.33 and moving up to No. 4 on Liberty's all-time list.
On Saturday, the native of San Leandro, Calif., won the Coastal Carolina Invitational men's steeplechase title with a time of 8:57.26. That is the fastest men's steeplechase time in the nation during the very early stages of the 2013 season and is less than a second off of MacDonald's personal best (8:56.65).
MacDonald is slated to run the 10K on Thursday. Last season, he clocked a personal-best 10K time of 30:57.09 at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium, winning the event at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
Back to Normal
At last week's Coastal Carolina Invitational, quite a few Liberty athletes either sat out the meet or competed in different events than usual. This time around, many Flames and Lady Flames will make their 2013 outdoor season debuts in some of their top events at the Shamrock Invitational.
For the Lady Flames, Abigail Flower will run the 100 and 200, Khristina Kanagy is entered in the 5K and Ansley Gebben will make her collegiate debut in the 400 hurdles. In field events, the duo of Janae Jones and Melissa Rohwer will triple jump and Mychelle Cumings will throw the shot put.
