Liberty's Valerie Thong has been named the Big South Conference Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week, as announced this afternoon by the conference office. Thong's first freshman of the year honor covers matches played between March 4-10.

Thong captured a pair of wins in singles play last week, running her winning streak to a team-best four matches. The Alhambra, Calif. native delivered the clinching point in Liberty's 4-3 win at UNC Asheville last Thursday. Competing in the No. 5 position, Thong ousted Christin Boissevain in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

In Saturday's 4-3 win against Lipscomb, Thong once again delivered the clinching singles point of the day, defeating Alyssa Bellini in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, for her fifth singles victory of the season. The freshman also notched a win in doubles play with partner Cameron Richard against the Bison. The Lady Flames' No. 3 tandem knocked of Melissa Kromer and Shilpa Naruka, 8-3, for their fifth win of the year as a pair.

With wins in both singles and doubles action yesterday versus Western Kentucky, Thong holds an overall record of 5-2 and 6-4 in singles and doubles play, respectively.

"Val's game is growing daily," commented Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "As she improves, she has seen that her game is not one-dimensional. Last week she did a great job of using her variety to prevail over her opponents and is very deserving of this award."

The Lady Flames (6-5, 3-1 Big South) will return to action a week from today, when they host East Carolina at 1:30 p.m. at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts.
