Liberty Notches 3 IC4A/ECAC Qualifiers on Friday

Meredith Mistretta clocked a 10K personal-best time of 37:24.78 on Friday, qualifying for the ECAC meet.

The Liberty men's and women's track & field teams got their 2013 outdoor campaign off to a successful start, Friday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The Flames and Lady Flames recorded three IC4A/ECAC qualifying performances on the day at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Meredith Mistretta (10K) and Christina Mitchell (Javelin) notched ECAC qualifiers, while Daniel Klase (Javelin) punched his ticket to the IC4A meet.

Women's Meet Recap
Mistretta posted arguably the most impressive performance in the women's 10K, lopping 1:38 off of her personal-best time with a 37:24.78 effort. The sophomore now ranks No. 6 on the Lady Flames' all-time list for the 25-lapper.

Mitchell, the defending Big South women's javelin champion, opened her final collegiate season with a victory in the event. Her winning toss sailed 143-9, while freshman teammate Yana Babbitt placed third at 118-9 in her collegiate debut.

Another freshman, Brittany Crittenden, won the open section of the women's long jump with a collegiate-best 16-8.5 leap.

Mychelle Cumings was another lofty finisher for the Lady Flames, throwing the hammer 154-0 for fifth place.

Men's Meet Recap
Klase, a sophomore, finished as the men's javelin runner-up on Friday. His top toss pierced the ground at 198-1, moving him into 10th place in program history. Classmate Steve Feister came in fifth in the event with a 179-8 heave.

The Flames' 4 x 800 relay quartet of Paul Arslain, Jarred Cornfield, John Sherret and Isaac Wendland won the event by five seconds with a 7:45.37 clocking.

Zach Barker crossed the line in 32:46.20 in the 10K, coming in fifth place overall.

The Coastal Carolina Invitational will resume Saturday at 10 a.m., with a full day of competition slated.
