Flames Improve to 6-1 with 7-0 Sweep of Guilford

Guillem Secanell downed Mark Cheong 6-1, 6-0 for his first collegiate win on Sunday.

The Liberty men's tennis team recorded its fourth 7-0 sweep of the season on Sunday, rolling past the visiting Guilford Quakers at the Hershey Tennis Courts.

The Flames are off to their best start in program history with their sixth win in seven matches. After the loss, Guilford falls to 3-3 on the season.

Liberty breezed through the doubles matches, winning each bout by an 8-1 final. At the No. 2 spot, Dillon Segur and Jorge Azuero remained a perfect 5-0 on the year after knocking off Turner Votipka and Mark Cheong. Siim Tuus and Stan Vaughan downed Byron Hamilton and Ben Nelson in the No. 3 position to up their season record to 4-3 as a pair. In the No. 1 position, the Flames' Shea Thomas and Egon Samaai improved to 6-1 in doubles matches this season after defeating Erik Meiler and Trevor Cox.

Liberty head coach Chris Johnson juggled his singles lineup around, inserting a trio of freshmen, Guillem Secanell, Sergio Mourelo and Josiah Boda, into the rotation for Tuus, Azuero and Samaai.

With different players in the lineup, Segur moved up to the No. 2 singles spot and blanked Meiler in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

Secanell increased Liberty's lead to 3-0 after collecting his first collegiate win over Cheong, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 position.

In the No. 6 spot, Boda collected a straight-set win versus Blake Brown, 6-1, 6-0, sealing the victory for Liberty.

Vaughan grabbed his fifth singles win of the season, rolling past Cox 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 3 position.

Playing in the No. 1 spot for the first time this season, Thomas ousted Votipka 6-1, 6-3 to improve to a team-best 7-0 in singles play on the year.

Mourelo completed the sweep for the Flames by knocking off John Brvenik 6-1, 6-1 for his second collegiate victory.

Liberty opens Big South play on Wednesday with a home tilt versus Longwood, beginning at 1 p.m.
