Mitchell Places 4th in ECAC Pentathlon
Liberty redshirt senior Christina Mitchell finished fourth in the ECAC pentathlon, highlighting the Flames' opening day at the 2013 IC4A and ECAC Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, Friday at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.
Mitchell's performance and Audrey Bamford's eighth-place pentathlon effort gave the Lady Flames six total team points. That puts Liberty in a tie for third place with Rhode Island and Vermont through one ECAC event. Manhattan is the early leader with 10 points.
Mitchell scored a season-best 3,614 points to record the second lofty ECAC pentathlon finish of her career. She previously placed third in 2011.
Mitchell posted solid performances in all five events on Friday, beginning with a 9.08 clocking in the 60-meter hurdles and a season best-equaling 5-4.25 high jump clearance. She placed second among the pentathletes with a 37-10 shot put before long jumping an indoor personal-best 17-11.5. Mitchell then wrapped up the competition with a season-best 2:35.20 800-meter clocking.
Bamford made a successful ECAC debut, scoring a personal-best 3,393 points for eighth place. The Keystone State native established new lifetime-best marks for the shot put (35-3) and 800-meter run (2:33.06) along the way.
Also making her first career ECAC appearance was sophomore Riley Brandon, who finished ninth in the pentathlon with 3,260 points. She closed her day in style, racing to a personal-best 2:23.09 clocking in the 800.
Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Cody Bingham sits in seventh place in the IC4A heptathlon competition after totaling 2,775 points through Friday's four disciplines. His strongest event of the day was the shot put, as Bingham reached a personal-best 41-4.25 with his top effort. That helped put Bingham 93 points ahead of his previous best opening-day heptathlon score.
Saturday's action at the IC4A and ECAC Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships will begin at 10 a.m., with a trio of IC4A events, including the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles, triple jump and weight throw.
