Flames to Host a Pair of Non-Conference Opponents This Weekend
The Liberty Flames men's tennis team continues its three-match home stand this weekend with a pair of non-conference tilts, beginning on Saturday versus Eastern Kentucky and concluding with a Sunday afternoon contest against Guilford. Both matches are scheduled to be played at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts and are each slated to begin at 1 p.m.
Live stats for both contests will be available by clicking the live stats links located on the men's tennis schedule/results page located on LibertyFlames.com.
The Flames are off to a 4-1 start for the first time since the 2001 campaign. A win on Saturday would mark the second time ever Liberty has started a year 5-1, with the only other time coming in 1997.
In its last match, Liberty routed the visiting Morgan State Bears, 7-0, for its third 7-0 sweep of the season. The Flames' No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, Siim Tuus and Shea Thomas, both picked up victories to remain undefeated in singles tilts this season at 5-0. In the No. 1 doubles spot, Thomas and Egon Samaai upped their record to 4-1 on the year.
In doubles action, the Flames are 10-3 overall. After Thomas and Samaai's four wins, Segur and Azuero are a perfect 3-0 in the No. 2 spot, while Tuus and Vaughan also have three victories in the No. 3 position.
Eastern Kentucky enters Saturday's match with a 5-6 overall record, including a 0-5 mark on the road. The Colonels have faced four ranked opponents this season, dropping each contest. This will be the first meeting ever between Eastern Kentucky and Liberty.
A quartet of Colonels have five wins on the season, including No. 1 singles player Daridge Saidi. Overall, the team is 31-29 in singles matches during its dual-match schedule.
In doubles play, Eastern Kentucky is led by Alex Alvaro and Juanjo De La Llera with a 4-4 mark, competing in the No. 1 position. As a team, the Colonels are 11-17 overall in doubles tilts.
Guilford is currently riding a three-match winning streak coming into the weekend. The Quakers are 3-1 overall on the year. Sunday's match will also be the first time the Flames and Quakers have faced each other on the court.
John Brvenik, Mark Cheong and Trevor Cox pace Guilford with identical 3-1 singles records for the season. The trio accounts for nine of the Quakers' 13 singles victories this year.
Three doubles tandems have each recorded a pair of victories in doubles tilts this year to lead Guilford. The squad as a unit is an even 6-6 in doubles matches this season.
Following Sunday's match, Liberty will play a rescheduled Big South contest versus Longwood on Wednesday at home beginning at 1 p.m.
