Campbell Comes From Behind to Defeat Liberty, 4-3
The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team jumped out to a 2-0 advantage against Big South opponent Campbell, but were not able to hold onto the lead as the Camels came from behind to win, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon at the Nesbit Tennis Center.
The loss snaps Liberty's two-match winning streak as the Lady Flames fall to 2-5 (1-1 Big South) on the season. The Camels upped their record to 2-7 (1-0 Big South) overall.
For the third consecutive match, the Lady Flames began play by collecting the doubles point to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
In the No. 3 position, Liberty's Cameron Richard and Valerie Thong ousted Ewa Telenga and Lauren Vaughan, 8-3, before Jessie Boda and Brittany Yang clinched the doubles tally with an 8-6 win against Anna Maria Ortiz and Natasha Afridi in the No. 2 spot.
Freshman Thong quickly extended the Liberty lead to 2-0 after making quick work of Lourdes Ros, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 6 spot.
The Camels battled back to knot the contest at two points apiece with wins in the first two singles positions. Ortiz knocked off Jenkins, 6-2, 6-1, before Stanic downed Richard, 6-4, 6-1.
Newly named Big South Women's Player of the Week, Wellman, continued her strong play with a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set win against Telenga in the No. 5 spot to pull Liberty within one point of clinching the match.
The Camels tied the match once again, as Afridi downed Yang, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 4 position.
In the deciding match, Liberty's Alexandra Sheeran won a hard-fought first set against Chernaya, 7-6 (8-2). The Lady Flames' junior led in the second set 5-3 (30-0), but was not able to hold on as the Camels' No. 3 player came back to win, 7-6 (8-3). Chernaya secured the victory for Campbell with a 6-1 win in the final set.
"The girls laid it on the line today," said Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "I was very proud of their effort, but we need to continue to improve on closing games and matches and playing better under pressure."
The Lady Flames continue Big South play on Saturday at home versus Coastal Carolina, beginning at 1 p.m.
