Wellman Honored as Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Liberty sophomore Nicola Wellman has been announced as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's Tennis Player of Week, as released today by the conference. Wellman's award covers matches played between Feb. 18-24.
It is the second Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week award for the Lady Flames, as Brittany Yang was honored following the season's first week of competition.
"Nicola has been working hard on her fitness and her game and it showed last week as she played solid tennis in both singles and doubles," commented Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "She continues to improve and this award is an indication of her progress this spring."
Wellman posted a perfect week, winning both of her singles matches and one doubles contest. The Florida native downed Hannah Hill of Longwood in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, last Wednesday, helping the Lady Flames earn their first win of the season and begin Big South play with a 1-0 record.
Wellman and doubles partner Rebekah Jenkins contributed one of Liberty's three doubles wins against the Lancers, ousting Allison Shulman and Marta Pinyol, 8-1, in the No. 1 position.
The sophomore capped her perfect week with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Morgan State's Tiffany Hughes this past Friday as the Lady Flames collected their second consecutive victory. Wellman and Jenkins were leading their doubles match, 7-6, before the contest was ended early and ruled unfinished.
Wellman is 3-2 in singles matches this season, including a 3-1 mark while competing in the No. 5 position.
The Lady Flames will look for their third win in a row on Thursday, when they travel to face Big South foe, Campbell. Match time versus the Camels is slated for 2 p.m.
