The Liberty men's basketball team steps onto the Vines Center court for the final time, this season, playing host to Commonwealth and Big South competitor VMI, Tuesday night. Tied at 14-14 in the all-time series, Liberty looks to gain the edge against a Keydet squad that has lost six straight games.
The contest also marks Liberty's Senior Night and will feature a special presentation for Flames guard Tavares Speaks prior to tipoff. Game time is slated for 7 p.m., with the contest airing live on the Liberty Channel, MASN, ESPN3 and ESPN Full Court.
What to Watch for
- JR Coronado did something on Saturday that no other Liberty player has ever done in the Vines Center – grab 18 rebounds in a single game. However, VCU's Kendrick Warren pulled down 20 boards in the facility during Liberty's season opening loss to the Rams on Dec. 4, 1993. With that said, Coronado has a new goal to shoot for in the Flames final home game of the 2012-13 season.
- Davon Marshall continues to climb the Liberty record books. The junior now has 77 three-pointers on the season, needing four more to surpass Anthony Smith (80, 2008) for third on Liberty's single season three-point field goal listing. Given Marshall's recent hot hand from three-point range, look for him to go for the mark on Tuesday.
- Speaking of record books, John Caleb Sanders has a chance to reach a scoring milestone. The Sugar Land, Texas native needs 12 tallies to reach 900 for his Liberty career. Sanders' has the chance to achieve the feat sooner than his old brother Jesse did in his Liberty career. The elder Sanders, who finished his career 15th on the all-time scoring list with 1,235 tallies, did not reach 900 points until game No. 6 of his senior season (vs. William & Mary, Nov. 20, 2011).
- Senior Night in college basketball has a way of producing memorable performances for seniors around the country. As one of Liberty's most consistent scorers, this year, Tavares Speaks has a chance to go out with a bang in his final game in the Vines Center. It will be interesting to see what kind of performance "Trap" puts on, Tuesday.
