Catcher Trey Wimmer

Liberty catcher Trey Wimmer has been named the Big South Conference Baseball Player of the Week for games played Feb. 18-24, the conference announced today.

Wimmer batted .667 (6-for-9) with six RBI, three doubles and two triples in leading the Flames to a three-game sweep of Penn State during the opening of the Liberty Baseball Stadium over the weekend.  The senior catcher from Greenwood, S.C., started the series on Saturday with a two-RBI single in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and push the Flames to a 4-1 win over the Nittany Lions.  In game one of a double header on Sunday, Wimmer belted a double and triple, finishing with three RBIs during a 12-3 victory.  He closed out the series with two doubles, a triple and an RBI in a 6-1 Liberty win.

For the series, Wimmer notched a 1.444 slugging percentage and recorded an on-base percentage of .600. He also stole a base and threw out the only runner attempting to steal a base in the series.

The honor marks his first Big South Player of the Week nod for his career. Wimmer is the second consecutive Flame to garner the honor.  Outfielder Ryan Cordell was selected as the conference's Player of the Week for his play during the 2013 season's opening weekend.

Liberty travels to Elon, N.C. tomorrow for a midweek contest against the Elon Phoenix.  First pitch at Latham Park on Tuesday is scheduled for 4 p.m.
