SIU Edwardsville Rallies to Beat Liberty, 4-3
Liberty built a 3-1 lead over SIU Edwardsville on Sunday, before the Cougars rallied to defeat the Lady Flames, 4-3, at Twin Creeks Park in Woodstock, Ga.
SIU Edwardsville improves to 3-3 on the season with the victory. The Lady Flames, at 0-3, remain in search of their first win of the season heading into their Sunday afternoon game against IUPUI.
Katie Zavodny recorded a two-run double, while Amber Donovan doubled in a run for Liberty. Sammi Shivock registered two hits for the Lady Flames, who also received hits from Megan Robinson and Hanna Nichols.
Chandler Ball pitched the first five innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out four. Alyssa DiMartino (0-1) allowed one run during one inning pitched.
Brittany Toney batted 3-for-3 for the Cougars, who also got a homer from Chelsea Yankolovich.
Haley Chambers (2-1) picked up the win in relief, pitching the final 4 2/3 innings while allowing two hits and striking out seven. Starter Amanda Lambrecht lasted 2 1/3 frames, yielding three runs on four hits.
The Cougars struck first during the opening inning, as leadoff batter Yankolovich walked. Alex McDavid gave SIU Edwardsville the lead with a double to the fence in center, driving in Yankolovich for a 1-0 SIUE lead.
Liberty bounced back, using a two-out rally to plate a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Robinson doubled, followed by walks to Han and Stephens. Zavodny then drove in Robinson and Han with a double, making the score 2-1, Liberty.
The Lady Flames added a run in the third inning. After Lawrence led off with a walk and a stolen base, Donovan sent an RBI double to right center for a 3-1 edge. Chambers then came in for Lambrecht and got the final two outs.
SIUE scored one run in each of its final three times at bat. The Cougars drew to within one, 3-2, in the bottom of the fourth when Toney drove in Kelsey Hansen with an RBI double.
A solo homer by Yankolovich in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at 3-3.
Liberty threatened to go ahead in the sixth inning, as Allen reached base on an error. With one out, Nichols singled and went to second on the throw, putting runners on second and third. A strikeout and groundout defused the scoring chance, leaving the score knotted at 3-all.
The Cougars went ahead when Taylor Tooley hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning. Riggs was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and then went to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a passed ball. Tooley's sac fly then made it 4-3, SIU Edwardsville.
Donovan walked with two outs in the top of the seventh, but a groundout by Nordan ended the game with SIU Edwardsville on top by a 4-3 score.
The Lady Flames close out their participation at the KSU Classic when they face IUPUI at 1 p.m. this afternoon.
