The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team traveled up the road to Blacksburg, Va. on Sunday for a match against the Virginia Tech Hokies. Despite an early win in doubles play from Valerie Thong and Cameron Richard, the Lady Flames fell to the Hokies by a final score of 6-1.

Liberty drops to 0-3 on the season, while Virginia Tech ups its record to 6-1 overall.

"The girls are inching closer to the level of play that I know they are capable of," commented Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "Their effort is high, but they are learning how to raise their levels at the right time. Against a good team like Virginia Tech, we have to maintain a higher level throughout the match."

Virginia Tech collected wins in two out of the three doubles tilts to claim the doubles point for the match. After the Hokies took the first doubles match in the No. 1 position, the Lady Flames' tandem of Thong and Richard doubled up Megan Conley and Mariana Silva, 8-4, in the No. 3 spot.

Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita downed the Liberty pair of Brittany Yang and Jessie Boda, 8-4, to give Virginia Tech the contest's doubles point.

Moving on to singles play, Richard, playing in the No. 1 position, grabbed the first set from Ilinca Stoica, 6-2. Stoica rallied for wins in the final two sets, 6-1, 6-3, to clinch the match.

In the No. 2 position, Virginia Tech's Isel Martinez-Marcos outlasted the Lady Flames' Rebekah Jenkins, 6-2, 6-4, while Liberty's Alexandra Sheeran  at No. 3 also fell, 6-0, 6-0 to Kelly Williford.

Nicola Wellman tallied Liberty's point on the afternoon at the No. 5 position, 3-6, 4-1 (Ret.), when Virginia Tech's Tea Ivanovic was forced to retire midway through the contest due to injury.

The Lady Flames fell in the remaining two singles matches, with Mita downing Yang, 6-2, 6-0, and Annisha Domenech falling in a hard-fought match to Emily Lauten, 7-5, 6-1.
