Khristina Kanagy qualified for the ECAC meet with her 17:31.30 5K clocking on Friday.

Liberty senior Khristina Kanagy clocked a 5K time of 17:31.30 on Friday at the Tyson Invitational, placing third in the event and qualifying for the ECAC Division I Indoor Track & Field Championship.

Kanagy, the reigning Big South indoor women's 5K champion, used a 37.84-second last lap to dip under the ECAC standard.

Meanwhile, two Liberty men's athletes recorded top-five finishes at the Randal Tyson Track Center, which will host the 2013 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships next month.

Ryan Smith threw the weight 61-10.25 for fourth place. Fellow senior Kevin Reddington came in fifth in the college section of the men's long jump, thanks to a leap of 23-2.5.

Other notable finishes by the Flames on Friday included a 22nd-place effort (51-11) by Mychelle Cumings in the women's weight throw and Andre Washington's season-best 400-meter dash clocking of 49.12.

Cumings will be one of the first Liberty athletes in action on Saturday at the Tyson Invitational, beginning the women's shot put at noon Eastern. At the same time, teammates Janae Jones and Melissa Rohwer will start the women's triple jump competition.
