Jacob DeValve leads the heptathlon after Thursday's events at the Liberty Quad.

Competing in his first heptathlon of the 2012-13 season, Liberty redshirt junior Jacob DeValve leads the field after Thursday's events at the Liberty Quad. DeValve scored 2,781 points during his four disciplines at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center.

DeValve, who owns a 58-point advantage over Liberty director of operations Daniel Newell, got his day started with a personal-best 60-meter dash time of 7.11 seconds. He later threw an impressive 50-10 in the shot put, with his top throw landing 10 feet past his nearest competitor.

Cody Bingham currently sits in third place with 2,682 points. He finished his day with a bang, making a first-attempt clearance at a personal-best 6-0.75 in the high jump.

The seventh annual Liberty Quad will resume Friday at 2 p.m., with the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles. The men's weight throw will get field events started at 3:30 p.m., while the first open track event of the day will be the men's 3K, set for a 4 p.m. start.

Meanwhile, a number of Liberty athletes will compete at the Tyson Invitational, which gets under way tomorrow at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. The first Lady Flame in action will be Melissa Rohwer, who will begin the women's long jump at 1 p.m. Eastern.
