Liberty's Egon Samaai has been announced as the Big South Conference Crons Brand Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week, as released earlier today by the conference. The award spans matches played from Jan. 28-Feb. 3.

The Flames played only one contest last week, downing Bluefield State, 7-0, on Friday in their season opener. Samaai, playing in his first collegiate dual match, tallied victories in both his doubles and singles matches on the afternoon.

Samaai, coupled with teammate Shea Thomas, set the early tone for Liberty against the Blues. The Flames' tandem rolled past Jacob Carey and Piotr Kruk, 8-1, while competing in the No. 1 position. Liberty went on to sweep all three doubles matches on the day.

In the No. 5 singles position, Samaai ousted Vlad Catlan in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to cap a perfect afternoon for the freshman.

The Flames return to action this Friday evening with their 2013 home opener against Bridgewater. The contest is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the Sports Racket.
