Shea Thomas was part of the Flames 7-0 sweep of Bluefield State on Friday.

The Liberty men's tennis team opened the dual-match portion of its 2013 schedule with a 7-0 sweep of Bluefield State on Friday afternoon at the Greenbrier Resort. The Flames completed a perfect match by winning all three doubles matches and each of their six singles contests during the afternoon.

Liberty improves its record to 1-0 on the young season, while Bluefield State falls to 0-1. This marked the third consecutive year that the Flames have opened with a win over the Blues.

"Our team did a great job today," stated Liberty head coach Chris Johnson. "We came into the match sharp and played very well. I was excited to see us executing this early in the year."

Shea Thomas and Egon Samaai carried over their strong doubles play from the fall season and captured a win in the No. 1 position for Liberty. The Flames' tandem downed Jacob Carey and Piotr Kruk, 8-1.

Liberty's sophomore combination of Jorge Azuero and Dillon Segur defeated Vishwesh Sinha and Shikhar Kapur, 8-3. Siim Tuus and Stan Vaughan made it 3-for-3 in doubles wins for the Flames by knocking off the Blues' Vlad Catlan and Niklas Sparr, 8-2.

The Flames continued to roll during singles play, posting wins in each of their six matches, while not dropping a single set to the Blues.

Tuus, Liberty's top returning singles player from a year ago, started off the season strong with a convincing, 6-2, 6-2, triumph over Sinha in the No. 1 position.

In the No. 2 position, Thomas rolled past Carey. The junior dropped only one game, while claiming the 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Segur and Azuero picked up wins in the No. 3 and 4 positions, respectively. Segur ousted Kruk in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, while Azuero cruised to victory over Kapur, 6-1, 6-2.

Samaai and Vaughan rounded out Liberty's sweep over the Blues. The South African native, Samaai, downed Catlan, 6-1, 6-2, and Vaughan bested Conner Pickering, 6-3, 6-3.

Liberty returns to action a week from today with its home opener against Bridgewater. The Friday evening match is slated to begin at 6 p.m. at the Sports Racket.
